Trophy

John McDonald Memorial Trophy

At the Hamilton meeting in May of 2011, member Bruce Grenville suggested that Life Membership be abolished and in its place an award perhaps called the ‘Hayward’ in memory of early Kiwi film maker Rudall Hayward be established and given to a deserving member (or members) possibly at each 6 monthly meeting.  The consensus was that Life Membership was important and should remain but the idea of another award was a good one.  However, member David Lascelles advised that is could not be called the ‘Hayward’ as one already existed in this name and after further discussion, it was decided to call the award the ‘John McDonald Memorial Award’ after the first Patron of our association.  This was agreed to and it was decided that it would be awarded yearly at the AGM in November.  John’s widow Marie was thrilled with the decision to honour her late husband.

Member Ian Fisher made the base out of Kauri, recycled from an old church pew.  A genuine Ensign spool donated by Life Member, Bryan Ellis completed the trophy.

The trophy was first presented to a member in November 2011 for the year 2012.
